Charlotte, NC – Sullenberger Aviation Museum (SAM) is proud to announce the appointment of John T. Bartlett as its new Vice President of Education, effective immediately. Bartlett brings more than a decade of leadership experience in museum education, STEM outreach, and community engagement, and joins SAM during an exciting period of growth and renewed commitment to inspiring future aviators and innovators.
Bartlett succeeds Misty Sweat, who served with distinction and recently transitioned to a new leadership role as a principal with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ virtual learning program.
With a background that spans both formal and informal education, Bartlett most recently served as Director of Early Learning Experiences at Discovery Place in Charlotte. There, he led the development of early childhood programs, built strong community partnerships, and played a key role in securing and implementing grant-funded initiatives that advanced equitable access to STEM learning.
Prior to his role at Discovery Place, Bartlett held several senior positions at the Children’s Museum Houston, including Director of Exhibit Engagement and Science Education Manager. His work included designing hands-on, inquiry-based science programming, expanding digital learning through educational video series, and leading diverse teams to deliver transformative museum experiences.

As Vice President of Education, Bartlett will oversee all education, volunteer, and workforce development initiatives at SAM, including the museum’s signature programs such as Flight Forward, AeroQuest Summer Camps, and Discovering Aviation Field Trips. He will also lead the strategic use of the museum’s Honeywell Makerspace to deliver immersive, hands-on learning experiences for students of all ages.
A native of North Carolina, Bartlett holds a Master of Science in Marine Science from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from NC State University. His appointment underscores SAM’s continued investment in educational excellence, equity, and workforce development.
