Museum Collections

About Our Museum Collection

The Sullenberger Aviation Museum collects and cares for artifacts significant to North Carolina and South Carolina aviation history. Our collection began as a volunteer-led effort to amass aviation related material.

Today, the Museum’s collection includes a wide variety of military, commercial and civilian aircraft. In addition, the Museum maintains an extensive collection of books, periodicals, photographs, uniforms and other aviation related materials.

Our Collection Policy

We acquire and maintain collections to preserve appropriate examples of historic and contemporary materials for present and future generations. The Museum collects items directly related to the existing thematic framework & communication objectives of the museum and the museum’s mission.

Procedure for Making a Donation

The Museum accepts materials that fit our mission and align with our Board-approved Collections Policy. The Museum acquires and maintains collections to preserve and protect appropriate examples of historic and contemporary materials for present and future generations.

Every acquisition to the museum must meet the conditions for acceptance and fit into the mission of the Museum. Each acquisition that meets these requirements must be acquired according to procedures that ensure proper care and record keeping. To best illustrate the Museum’s mission, the Museum only collects items that directly relate to the following thematic framework and communication objectives:

  1. The Carolinas have the longest history of powered flight in the world.
  2. All planes fly, but their different functions determine their design and shape.
  3. The innovations from military aircraft development have changed all our lives.

Making a Donation Appointment

Items that fit collecting guidelines must be approved by the Collections Committee prior to acceptance into the collection.

SAM asks that potential donors do not drop in with potential donations without an appointment. Donors must make an appointment with Collections staff in order to make a donation. Mailed donations cannot be opened.

Contact us for appointment by calling Casey at (704) 997-3770 ext 3774 or emailing casey@sullenbergeraviation.org.
