On a carrier deck, space is tight and the runway short. This is even more of a problem with jets. The Navy solved the problem by designing a small jet that could operate from a WWII-sized carrier.
The A-4 Skyhawk is nicknamed the “Scooter” and “Kiddycar.” Although not supersonic, the aircraft proved to be formidable in ground attacks. It was highly maneuverable and able to carry its own weight in weapons. It’s designed to carry a nuclear bomb, which is why it stands so high off the ground.
