Captain Sullenberger Joins Aviation Legends in National Aviation Hall of Fame

On September 24th, 2026, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger took his place amongst aviation’s most celebrated pioneers when he was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) Class of 2026. For millions around the world, Sullenberger is synonymous with courage, professionalism, and extraordinary leadership under pressure.

On January 15, 2009, he made aviation history when US Airways Flight 1549 struck a flock of birds shortly after departing New York City’s LaGuardia Airport, disabling both engines. With no viable runway available, Sullenberger and the crew successfully executed an emergency landing on the Hudson River, saving all 155 people aboard. With his induction, he has joined an extraordinary group of aviation legends, including Orville and Wilbur Wright, Amelia Earhart, and Charles Lindbergh.

Sullenberger’s legacy extends far beyond that remarkable day. He has spent his entire career advocating for aviation safety. After the historic flight, he became a leading voice for continued advancements in aviation safety around the globe, championing pilot safety and serving as the US Ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization.

“Aviation has been my life,” said Captain Sullenberger. “I think it is a human need to try to leave the world better than we found it. In this domain, I think we aviation professionals have done that. I hope my career will inspire others to find their own passion and purpose in the air.”

“On behalf of our staff, board, and supporters, the entire team at Sullenberger Aviation Museum proudly congratulates Captain Sullenberger on this well deserved honor,” said Stephanie Hathaway, President & CEO of Sullenberger Aviation Museum. “It is an honor to carry his name and his legacy forward at the museum. His story continues to inspire everyone who walks through our doors.”

The NAHF’s 62nd Annual Enshrinement Ceremony and Dinner was held at The Anthem concert hall in Washington, DC, where former LaGuardia Airport Departure Controller Patrick Harten, who assisted during the emergency that day, accepted the honor on Sullenberger’s behalf. Capt. Sullenberger made remarks virtually.
